Personal pitch

Write a good personal pitch as a basis for your job search! Your personal pitch is a short but pithy presentation of you and where you highlight your unique qualities and whose purpose is to quickly capture the reader's interest. A good personal pitch can be around 50-70 words, but which still highlights who you are, what you have done, what you can do - and what goals you have.

A good personal pitch can consist of:

  • 5070 words, 3–4 sentences
  • Your title or current professional role
  • Hard and soft skills
  • Impressive achievements and results
  • Short/long-term goals
  • An example from your professional life that shows your suitability for the job you are applying for

If you can see that the author of a job advertisement has chosen certain distinctive words or wise tone, it may be a good idea to try to reflect this in your pitch.

If you don't yet have several years of experience in a particular area of interest, you can highlight your goals and where you are currently going to get there, as well as other similar experiences that could be valuable. Moreover, combining your experience and skills with concrete numbers and results often makes an impressive and strong impression.

Feel free to look at the examples below:

Strong Example An experienced digital marketing manager with six years of experience as a senior executive within a multinational company. I increased inbound leads by 300% and increased online sales from €300,000 per year to over €2.5 million in three years. I want to advance in my career and that's why I offer my expertise to X's marketing team.

Short and substantial with an emphasis on results.

Strong Example: An expert SEO copywriter with ten years of retail and wholesale experience in three industries. Adept at writing content for social media and www, as well as long-form content, which emphasizes the brand's own tone and message. I gained 20 new clients in two years and expanded my readership by 200%. I now want to deepen my skills as an editor and content creator in the role of marketing manager.

Strong Example: A content producer with three years of experience in a company specializing in e-commerce. I produced content that increased the brand's social media presence to over 100,000 across three different channels and improved email open rates by 58%. I want to advance in my career and therefore seek a position as SEO manager at V.

Weak Example: I am a content creator looking for a job as an SEO specialist. I have no experience in this field, but I am dedicated to my work and am quick to learn. My interest in search engines helps me to perform my duties excellently in your company.

The text does not attract the attention of the reader and does not mention any similar skills that may be relevant.

Weak Example: I have worked for five years as a digital marketing coordinator. I demonstrated that I am an important and hardworking team player and that I can work under pressure to achieve the company's goals. I am looking for new challenges in digital marketing.

Too general, does not tell about achievements. Unnecessarily passive in tone.

Applying with a portfolio convinces the employer

A portfolio is often a requirement for coders and developers, as well as for writers, artists, designers, photographers, web designers, illustrators, and other creative professionals. In these areas, the portfolio is an important part of the application process. You can build your portfolio on the platform of your choice. There are plenty of platforms where you can create a portfolio; www-pages, LinkedIn, Instagram, Sway, YouTube/Vimeo. If you're not sure how to showcase your skills, you can find plenty of examples on Google.

There are a few good practices to consider when creating a portfolio:

  • User-friendly navigation
Don't make it difficult to navigate or understand your portfolio. You want the reader to find what they're looking for quickly and easily. The easier it is to navigate, the better. Also think about what it is that the reader wants to see. Make it easy to find your best work samples. Also remember to organize your content so that visitors can choose to look at your work samples according to, for example, project type or other relevant criteria.
  • Include detailed descriptions
The description can include a personal account of the project's primary challenge or goal, your role, the key techniques or processes used, and any positive results or things you've learned.
  • Start strong
It goes without saying that your portfolio should contain your best work. To make the choice easier, let the job advertisement serve as your guide. Pay attention to the type of employee the employer is specifically looking for and the adjectives they use to describe them. Get to know the company and get a feel for its culture and values. Having this information will make it easier for you to match the best samples in your portfolio with what the employer is looking for. And of course, your samples should highlight your key strengths as well as your scope, industry expertise, style, and technical skills. You also don't want your best work to drown in a sea of examples. First impressions and last impressions are proven to have long-term effects, so feel free to start with your best case and end your portfolio with your second best case.
  • Think mobile
Most communication via the internet nowadays takes place on mobile devices. This means that if your portfolio isn't optimized for mobile users, you won't have a huge impact on most people who see it. The risk is that your cases can be displayed in reduced and misleading formats, so it is important that you make sure that your portfolio works for mobile devices.

A good resume is clear, informative and easy to read. It contains the most relevant information for the job that you want to apply for, such as work experience, technical skills, proper educational background, or otherwise important requirements. A resume should not last more than 2 pages. The most important information should be visible in seconds to the recruiting person.

It's always important to use clear language in a CV – so it might be a good idea to split a long sentence into two simpler sentences, for example. You can stand out from the crowd by giving your resume a unique design. In Canva, for example, you can find lots of graphic design templates for your CV to apply color and shape. However, remember to keep your resume clear and easy to read. If the job advertisement is in English, your CV needs to be as well. However, if the ad is in Swedish, it is often possible to use a CV in Swedish or English, unless otherwise stated.

What are the most important things in a resume?

• The things that are directly relevant to the position you are applying for – for example, that your work and study experience corresponds to what is requested.

• Basic aspects such as spelling, grammar and tone.

• That all your necessary contact information is included and correct.

• References – and that their contact information and consent are in order.

• Also briefly summarize your work experience in a few points; I worked, coordinated, raised sales..., was responsible for..., developed, designed, etc.

• A good personal pitch. See tips for good personal pitch above.

Is it worth adding a list of your own strengths in the job to your resume?

It's definitely worth it. Add the strengths that are most relevant to the mission or the needs of the employer. This also shows the recruiting person that you have understood what it takes for the job.

CV of a student or recent graduate

Students have often accumulated valuable knowledge or experience. For example, many students have some form of extra job alongside their studies. This experience, of course, is interesting for many employers. Highlight the qualities that you have and that you feel could be useful for the job you are applying for.

Characteristics that may be of interest to an employer can be, for example, sports activities, volunteering, mentoring, student exchange or study abroad, theater or music hobby, student union, internship or something else that you have a great interest in.

Thinking about how you are and how you act in a role will help you understand how you can also be as an employee.

Valuable qualities that you can have without work experience: initiative, critical thinking, organizational skills, expertise in special areas, leadership, customer focus, good communication skills, adaptability, creativity or patience.

A more summarized resume

You may not need to mention your first summer job anymore. Provide enough information about job responsibilities, duration, and content of previous jobs. Also, be sure to mention if you are still employed. Almost every one of us has gaps in our work history for one reason or another. Think about whether you want to open up the reasons for these, such as maternity leave, parental leave or unpaid leave.
